Bonnyville Notre Dame girls and Fort Mac Holy Trinity boys head to volleyball provincials

Zones weekend in Lac La Biche draws the best teams in the northeast

Bonnyville's Notre Dame High School girls volleyball team will be in Lloydminster over the November 23 weekend, competing to be the 3A high school provincial champs.

The girls earned their spot by finishing in first place of the zone championships hosted by Lac La Biche's J.A. Williams High School over the November 15 weekend. Joining the Bonnyville team as the zone representative on the boy's side is Fort McMurray's Holy Trinity High School. Both teams were part of the 16 boys and girls teams competing in the zone championships.

Notre Dame finished their weekend by beating Lloydminster's Holy Rosary High School.

On the boys' side, the Holy Trinity Knights beat the host-team J.A. Williams High School Sharks in the finals. The two teams needed a tie-breaking third set to determine the zone champ. The Knights beat the Sharks 18-16 in the tie-breaker.

The home-team Sharks hosted the Zone championships that saw 14 boys and girls senior high school teams take over the Bold Center courts through the weekend. The close games kept fans entertained through weekend, with many watching from a ring of seats around the courts and from the second level of the Bold Center's upper concourse.

St. Paul girls get bronze

While the JAWS boys finished their 2024 high school season with silver medals, the JAWS girls finished just outside of the medal playoffs, losing to the St. Paul Regional High School – in a final match that also needed a third-set tie-breaker.

The Notre Dame girls and the Holy Trinity boys will have a week to train before they represnet the region at provincials over the November 23 weekend. The Provincials will bring the top teams from each of the eight Alberta High School Athletic Association to play for the Alberta title.
