LETTER: Lower speed limit on dangerous stretch of Hwy. 2

A STARS helicopter lands on Highway 2 following a multi-vehicle crash near 338 Avenue.

Dear Editor,

On Oct. 17, I spent three hours trying to contact someone in the Ministry of Transportation and Economic Corridors who would help save lives by lowering the speed limit to 80 km/h at the deadly 338 Avenue crossing of Highway 2.

The Calgary office explained that "technically Highway 2 was designed for that speed." The key word is 'was’ designed. Okotoks is growing rapidly and the increased traffic flow from the impending widening of 338 Avenue to four lanes is creating an urgency to decrease the speed limit on Highway 2 from 110 km/h to 80 km/h until an overpass is built.

The frequency of fatalities has increased and most vehicles are doing more than 110 km/h; it looks like some are doing 160 km/h.

Let's see if Highwood MLA RJ Sigurdson can work his magic to save lives.
