A contractor was recognized in Diamond Valley this week for saving a co-worker's life during a fire this spring.

Cole Deighton received a Fire Chief Commendation during Diamond Valley’s council meeting on July 17.

The commendation is for Deighton’s actions on May 28, when a co-worker was trapped in a burning skid steer at a worksite in Foothills County.

"Cole witnessed the skid steer on fire with his co-worker trapped inside due to a door failure,” reads the commendation.

It says Deighton sprang into action and used a fire extinguisher to break a window on the machine and pull the worker to safety.

Deighton then used fire extinguishers on the blaze before jumping into a front-end loader and covering the skid steer with dirt and gravel to fully extinguish the fire.

The worker had severe burns and was airlifted from Oilfields Hospital.

The commendation says Deighton’s actions were crucial in saving the person's life.

The award was issued by Diamond Valley Fire Rescue Fire Chief TJ Moore and Foothills Fire Department Fire Chief Russ Friesen and includes a certificate and a personalized challenge coin.
