Longview-area film industry veteran named to Top 7 Over 70

John Scott poses for a portrait at the Twin Cities Saloon in Longview, Alta. on March 25.

A Longview area film industry icon will be recognized at an awards ceremony next month.

John Scott, whose name is synonymous with the film industry in southern Alberta, has been named a member of this year’s Calgary Top 7 Over 70.

The Top 7 Over 70 winners are selected for their achievements in everything from entrepreneurship, education and human rights to arts, sports and philanthropy.

A commendation on the awards’ website said Scott continues to put southern Alberta on the map.

“If there’s one person whose name is associated with luring big-budget films to southern Alberta, it’s John Scott.”

It goes on to say the 83-year-old rancher is a leading stunt expert and that he recently received a “location of the year” award at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Top 7 Over 70 not only recognizes the success of older adults in the Calgary area, it helps highlight the experience they have gained over the years and promotes the concept of utilizing and engaging that experience, organizers say.

The awards will be presented at a gala in Calgary on Oct. 23.

The other recipients are Ron Ghitter, Dr. Benno Nigg, Janice McTighe, Tania Willumsen, Mogens Smed and Tom Jackson.

Other recent achievements for Scott include being inducted into the Canadian Stunts Hall of Fame in October 2022 in addition to the Location of the Year Award that was presented in May 2023.
