Lac La Biche and Alberta RCMP are acknowledging that at least one investigation is ongoing in relation to human remains found within the northeastern Alberta police detachment's jurisdiction.
RCMP spokesperson Corp. Matthew Howell told Lakeland This Week on Monday afternoon that remains had been found and police were continuing to investigate.
Howell didn't provide a specific location of the found remains, when they had been located, or if foul play was suspected. He said details were not being released as the investigation is ongoing. He did say Mounties have been involved for several weeks.
In recent months, two residents from the region who have been reported missing have yet to be located; a woman, Rose Simonelis, in the Plamondon area and a man, Jeremy Collins, from the Kikino Metis Settlement.
While those disappearances are believed to be unrelated, there has been speculation from members of the general public relating to both incidents. Howell said he wasn't in a position to link the current police investigation to any specific missing person files at this time.
He said an update on the investigation into the found remains is planned, but he couldn't give an exact time for it.
Mounties in the Lac La Biche RCMP detachment serve an area of about 12,000 square kilometres from Fork Lake to Imperial Mills and Wandering River to Kikino.
