Multiple COVID-19 cases identified at Cochrane Walmart

COCHRANE— Multiple positive cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed at the Cochrane Walmart.

Alberta Health confirmed 21 COVID-19 cases have been linked to the Cochrane Walmart Outbreak. The store will be added to the province's COVID-19 outbreak list on Tuesday (April 27).

Of the cases identified at Walmart 18 are considered active and three recovered, said Alberta Health.

In a statement provided to The Cochrane Eagle, Walmart confirmed one identified case last worked on April 12, two identified cases last worked on April 14, five identified cases last worked on April 15, one identified case last worked on April 16, four identified cases last worked on April 17, one identified case last worked on April 18 and one case last worked on April 19.

“Several associates from our Cochrane Walmart store have recently tested positive for COVID-19. We’re keeping the associates in our thoughts and wish them a speedy recovery,” reads the statement from Walmart. 

The store is in contact with local public health, and a deep cleaning has been conducted of the store.

The store hours at Walmart have also been reduced from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., to 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Employees identified as a close prolonged contact of an associate who tested positive for COVID-19 are being directed to self-isolate.

The statement said safety remains a top priority at Walmart and enhanced measures to protect staff and customers remain in place. 

These measures include mandatory masks for customers and staff, limiting the number of customers shopping in the store at once, floor marking and one-way aisles to create physical distancing, increased cleaning throughout the store, wellness checks for associates at the start of each shift, cleaning shopping carts, encouraging regular hand washing, regular cleaning of work areas and installing Plexiglass dividers at registers, customer service desks and pharmacies.
