Two killed on Alberta highway after hitting animal and swerving into truck

Thirty seven-year-old man and 33-year-old woman killed in collision on northern Alberta highway.

Smoky Lake – Two Lac La Biche area residents are reported to have died in a collision on Highway 28, east of the community of Spedden in Smoky Lake County on July 4.

Smoky Lake RCMP received a report of a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 28 near range road 121 at 10:40 p.m.

“Upon arrival, emergency crews observed that two occupants of a Mazda sedan were deceased. The occupant of the other vehicle, a GMC 3500, sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital by EMS,” according to an RCMP media release. “The two deceased have been identified as a 33-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man both from the Lac La Biche area. RCMP remained on scene for several hours conducting an investigation. 

“Although early in the investigation, police believe that the Mazda struck an animal causing it swerve into oncoming traffic where it struck the GMC.

“RCMP express our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”
