New equipment installed in High River is gathering air quality data related to feedlot odours.

The Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB) said in a media release that its Scentroid CTair unit can measure indicators such as ammonia and volatile organic compounds that are not measured by an existing portable air monitoring station in northwest High River.

Set up at the same location as the existing station, the agency said the new equipment will help monitor and assess odours related to the Rimrock Feeders feedlot west of town.

Data gathered will be validated and released monthly on the NRCB website, with the first data release taking place in mid-June.

A portable air monitoring station was installed in late 2022 as a partnership between the Town of High River, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas and the Calgary Region Airshed Zone (CRAZ).

In a press release at the time, the Town of High River said the station would help create a baseline air quality health index for the area and allow local air quality to be compared with other regions.

The NRCB said it will work closely with CRAZ to monitor and analyze data from both the CTair and the portable monitoring station.

Data from the portable air monitoring station is available on the CRAZ website
