Alberta agriculture will be highlighted in Mexico.
RJ Sigurdson, Highwood MLA and minister of agriculture and irrigation, will be in Mexico from Sept. 29 to Oct. 4 to promote Alberta's agriculture, with the trip aiming to showcase the industry's strengths, attract foreign investment and build strategic partnerships.
“Alberta offers investors a welcoming business climate and abundant, high-quality agricultural raw materials at competitive prices, with easy access to export markets," said Sigurdson.
"This is an excellent opportunity for me to connect with Mexican leaders, investors and decision makers to discuss how we can grow and strengthen existing trade and investment relations."
Alberta is the second-largest provincial exporter of agri-food products to Mexico, according to the Government of Alberta, while Mexico is Alberta’s fourth-largest agriculture export market.
Trade between Alberta and Mexico totalled $2.9 billion in 2023. Agriculture and agri-food accounted for about 83 per cent of Alberta’s total exports to Mexico in 2023, with Alberta’s top exports to Mexico including beef, canola seed, wheat, pork and malt.
Sigurdson's stops include Jalisco, where he will meet with Mexican agri-food organizations and government leaders, and Mexico City, where his itinerary includes attending the Food Tech Summit and Expo and North Capital Forum.
