President Joyce Loucks and the Foothills Retired Teachers Association are hosting an Aging in Place conference on April 16.

The Foothills Retired Teachers Association is holding a one-day conference in Okotoks to provide advice for aging adults to stay at home.

Association president Joyce Loucks said being able to age in place means planning ahead.

“More seniors are planning on staying in their homes,” Loucks said. “You can’t do it last minute.”

The Aging in Place conference takes place on Wednesday, April 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Viking Rentals Centre. The cost is $20 for association members and $25 for the public.

Advance registration is available by e-transfer to frtatreasurer@gmail.com, or attendees can pay cash at the door.

Loucks said there will be plenty of practical information for seniors or their families.

Conference presenters include an occupational therapist, nurses and AHS representatives who will speak about physical health and wellness and what can be done around the home to make aging in place safer and easier.

There was a great deal of positive feedback after the association held a similar conference last year, Loucks said.

“I've had people stop me on the street saying that they've used the information that they've received from that conference several times,” she said.

She is working on holding a small trade show in conjunction with the conference to provide information about service providers and organizations in the area.

Trade show spaces are still available, and anyone interested in getting a spot can email Loucks at loucksmj@gmail.com.
