The Sheep Creek Arts Council is hosting the following classes in April: Keep on Growing your Watercolour Skills with Renee Carrier April 17 to May 8 and Mosaic Stepping Stones with Christine Drake April 22 and 29. Starting in May we have: Paint Your Way with Vivian Wiebe on Mondays from May 1 to June 26; Paint a Highland Cow with Connie Gerts on May 6; Acrylic Painting for Beginners with Chester Lees from May 11 to June 8; Beginner Alcohol Inks with Wendy Poschman on May 13; and Improve your Cell Phone Photography with Bryan Liviler on June 7. The Roots & Blues Weekend is coming to the Rotary Performing Arts Centre. David Vest, one of the great boogie-woogie piano players, performs on Friday, April 21, while blues guitarist John Rutherford hits the stage on Saturday, April 22. Both shows are at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for one show are $30 in advance, $35 at the door; a weekend pass for both shows is $50, in advance only. okotoks.ca

 

Earth Day Swap is on Saturday, April 22 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Environmental Education Centre. Drop off gently used clothes, gardening tools and seeds from 10 a.m. to noon and take anything you need once swap begins at noon. okotoks.ca

The Okotoks Legion is hosting its annual Veterans Dinner at the Elks Club on Saturday, April 29. The meal is provided at no charge for all veterans and spouses as well as widows of RCMP and Commonwealth veterans within the Town of Okotoks limits. Canadian recording artist Aaron Halliday is bringing the Alan Jackson and Friends show to the Rotary Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, April 29 at 7 p.m. The show features all the Alan Jackson favourites along with the music of some of the best artists of that generation. okotoks.ca

 

The 2023 Okotoks Film Festival is holding a Launch Party on Sunday, April 30 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Okotoks Cinemas. Watch trailers and enjoy free popcorn as the film festival lineup is announced. Children's Makerspace at the Okotoks Public Library allows kids to drop into the children’s area of the library and make a themed craft. Upcoming themes include: Mother’s Day Cards (May 4 to 13) and Father's Day Cards (June 8 to 17). Hike For Hospice will be held on Sunday, May 7 from noon to 5:30 p.m. Participants will walk along the Town of Okotoks paved pathways starting and ending at the Okotoks Recreation Centre. Money raised will go to Foothills Country Hospice. countryhospice.org

Dewdney Players will stage Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at the Rotary Performing Arts Centre from May 12 to 27. Twelfth Night is a fast-paced comedy with romantic plots, mistaken identities and practical jokes. There are 7:30 p.m. performances on May 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27 and 2 p.m. matinees on May 20 and 27. okotoks.ca

 

The Okotoks & District Chamber of Commerce is hosting a breakfast on Tuesday, May 16 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Best Western Plus Okotoks Inns & Suites. The event will feature a presentation titled Self Leadership: The Keys to Actually Getting Things Done with Chris Wiersma. Tickets are $30 for members,

Picnic at the Piano with Steve Fletcher on Wednesday, May 17 from noon to 1 p.m. on the grounds of the Okotoks Art Gallery. Bring a picnic lunch and a blanket and enjoy a free, family-friendly concert featuring a keyboardist with an exceptionally broad range of musical influences. okotoks.ca

 

The 48-Hour Filmmaking Challenge will run from May 19 to 21. Teams are given a genre, prop and line of dialogue to use and will then have 48 hours to write, shoot and edit their film. Films will be screened during the Okotoks Film Festival. okotoks.ca

 

OM Chanting is held every Saturday at the Okotoks Public Library from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. It is an ancient, dynamic meditation technique which helps us realign with nature and existence. The Okotoks Art Gallery has a pair of exhibits on view until June 23. Stephen Strand’s Western Canada Landscapes is a collection of everyday scenes of Western Canada, while Patricia Lortie’s The Keepers uses the forest as a visual metaphor to explore concepts of self and community. okotoks.ca

 

Teachers Rule! exhibit is on view at the Okotoks Museum and Archives until June 30. The exhibit shares the trials and triumphs of some of the early teachers who taught in the Okotoks area as well as some fond and not-so-fond memories from their former students. okotoks.ca

 

The LEGO Club meets every Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. at the Okotoks Public Library. Kids aged six to 12 can enjoy playing with LEGO and meeting new friends in the free, drop-in activity. okotokslibrary.ca

Foothills Writers Group (formerly the Indie Author Group Okotoks) meets every third Thursday at the Okotoks Public Library from 6 to 8 p.m. The group is a community of local authors whose goal is to encourage and support writers during their creative journey. The Okotoks Chess Club meets every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Okotoks Public Library.
