Emergency crews attend a fatal two-vehicle collision on Highway 7 west of 16 Street W (Big Rock Trail) on April 27, 2022. The driver of the white SUV, Charizma Hunter Homer, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death on April 7.

The driver who caused a deadly collision near Okotoks three years ago was sentenced to house arrest in a Calgary court this month.

Charizma Hunter Homer, 26, was behind the wheel of a white Cadillac Escalade that collided head-on with a blue Honda Civic on Highway 7, west of Big Rock Trail, in April 2022, according to a statement signed by the accused.

As a result of the crash, the passenger in the Honda, Gail Kathleen (Kathy) Burke, died at the scene while her son, Christopher Burke, who was driving, died from his injuries one day after the accident.

Homer pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death at Calgary Court of King’s Bench on April 7.

She was handed a two-year-less-a-day conditional sentence following a joint submission from the defence lawyer and Crown prosecutor.

Homer will spend the first half of the sentence under house arrest and will have a curfew for the remaining time.

She was also given a three-year driving ban.

At the time of the collision, Homer was travelling west on the highway when she entered the opposing lane in an attempt to pass another vehicle and collided with the eastbound Honda.

Witnesses said the Cadillac was being driven recklessly and court documents say it was going “upwards of 148 kilometres per hour” while the Honda was going 99 km/h.
