Former Western Wheel staffer celebrates 100th birthday

Madeleine Fleck, who spent 30 years on staff, was instrumental in keeping the Wheel afloat in its early days.

Former Western Wheel employee Madeleine Fleck celebrated her 100th birthday at the Crystal Shores Beach House in Okotoks on Oct. 5.

Fleck joined the Wheel shortly after it was launched in 1976 and spent three decades with the paper in a variety of roles, including reporter, before she retired in 2006 at the age of 82.

Fleck started as a volunteer, learning the newspaper business from Wheel founder Stephen Cook before taking on greater responsibilities.

Fleck joined the Wheel staff because she felt it was important for the town to have a community newspaper.

She worked for the Wheel’s first four publishers.
