A major regional water project that’s been years in the making will break ground on Monday.
Foothills County and the Town of Okotoks are holding a groundbreaking ceremony for the Foothills Okotoks Regional Water Project on Oct. 21.
The project will see water pumped from the Bow River to treatment facilities in Okotoks and Foothills County to support residential and commercial growth in the area.
The groundbreaking takes place at the pipeline’s intake site near where the Bow and Highwood rivers meet in Foothills County.
Starting the project represents a new phase in regional cooperation, the Town said,
The Town of Okotoks and Foothills County received $30 million in provincial Water for Life Grant funding towards the project, to cover about 45 per cent of eligible project costs.
The Town of Okotoks did not release the total cost estimate but said eligible project costs were about $65 million.
The pipeline is expected to be up and running by 2026.
The project is being funded by grants and developers, with no impact to taxpayers.
