Wildfire smoke and hot temperatures will impact people in the Foothills today.
Smoke is expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility, Environment Canada said in an air quality advisory on July 24.
A heat warning remains in effect, with temperatures expected to hit 34 C today in Okotoks.
Although smoke may cause daytime highs to be a few degrees cooler than forecast, the combination of heat and very poor air quality will increase health risks, Environment Canada said.
“When there is an extreme heat event occurring with poor air quality, prioritize keeping cool,” the advisory states.
Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.
Forecasts for the Calgary region say the Air Quality Health Index will be “high risk” or “very high risk” today.
People more likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke, such as seniors, pregnant people, infants and young children, outdoor workers, people doing strenuous outdoor exercise and people with an existing illness or health condition, should avoid strenuous activities outdoors, the advisory says.
Limit time outdoors and consider rescheduling or cancelling outdoor sports, activities and events. People who must spend time outdoors can wear an N95 or equivalent respirator, which can reduce but not eliminate health risks, the advisory said.
Environment Canada said smoke conditions can change rapidly during the day.
The air quality advisory was issued by Environment Canada, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, and Alberta Health Services.
