Trail: Mesa (Square) Butte

Difficulty: Beginner to intermediate

Distance: 4 km (out and back)

Ascent: 265 metres

Trailhead: Drive 18 km west of Millarville on Highway 549. There will be a locked gate on the north side of the road. Walk up the gravel road. The trailhead will be on your left.

Description: This hike boasts an abundance of wild flowers in the summer with nice views of Calgary to the east and the mountains to the west. It includes two steep grassy hills. Make sure to sign the guest book that’s hidden in a black time capsule tucked into a pile of rocks under the lone pine tree at the very top. There is also a large fire pit and picnic table in the forested area on the ridge.

Reminder: Take adequate water, food and clothing in the event of sudden weather changes. Ensure someone knows where you’re going and when you’ll be back in the event you get lost or injured. Hiking alone is not recommended.
