A large crowd was on-hand to greet the CPKC Holiday Train as it pulled into Okotoks last December. The closest the train will get to Okotoks this year is a stop in Calgary on Saturday, Dec. 14.

The CPKC Holiday Train isn’t coming to Okotoks this year, but it’s making several stops in the Calgary region this weekend.

The closest the train will get to Okotoks is a stop at the Anderson C-Train Station in Calgary on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 6:30 p.m.

It will also make stops at Nose Creek Park in Airdrie on Friday, Dec. 13 at 5:30 p.m. and at the provincial building in Cochrane on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 3 p.m.

Magic! and Sofia Camara are scheduled to perform at all three stops.

The CPKC Holiday Train stopped in Okotoks last year but the route changes every year to accommodate as many locations as possible across the country.

CPKC operates two holiday trains — one in Canada and the other in the United States — that visit close to 200 communities over their month-long journeys from Nov. 21 to Dec. 20.

Professional musicians play free concerts from the brightly decorated train's stage at each stop.

The trains also raise money, food and awareness for food banks at each stop along the way. CPKC makes a donation to the local food bank at each stop and encourages attendees to also donate.

Since its inception in 1999, the CPKC Holiday Train has raised more than $24 million and more than five million pounds of food for community food banks across North America.
