Learn about indoor air quality in Okotoks at free workshop

Learn more about radon and other air contaminants at a free workshop being held in-person and online on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

The Town of Okotoks environment & sustainability team is hosting a free indoor air quality workshop on Wednesday, Sept. 18 as part of the Green Living Events series.

The workshop, featuring guest speaker Colin Dumais, will discuss indoor air contaminants such as carbon dioxide, PM2.5 (fine particulate matter) and radon, including how they are created, the impact they have on air and how to maintain healthy air quality.

Colin Dumais, who lives south of Okotoks, is the owner of Radon West, an internationally-recognized radon mitigation and testing company, and is one of only two certified Canadian – National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP) radon mitigation trainers in Canada.

In a 2017 study co-authored by Dumais, Okotoks and High River were found to have the second-highest average radon readings in the Calgary metropolitan region, after Cochrane.

Concerns around radon levels in Okotoks have been a popular topic of discussion, particularly after groundbreaking research this year by University of Calgary scientist Dr. Aaron Goodrazi indicated that radon levels in Foothills County are among the highest in the world,

As part of the workshop, Dumais will discuss the methods used to monitor and mitigate air contaminants such as radon, including hands-on equipment demonstrations.

The workshop is being held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. both in-person at the Environmental Education Centre and online

While the event is free, registration is required. Learn more and register for the event here.

The workshop is one of the Town of Okotoks’ responses to concerns around radon, including directly tackling the issue by letting residents borrow radon testing kits.
