Local Food Week kicks off with message from Minister Sigurdson

The minister of agriculture and irrigation encourages people to take part in Alberta Local Food Week, happening Aug. 12 to 18.

Agriculture in Alberta is in the spotlight this August, with Local Food Week happening across the province Aug. 12 to 18.

RJ Sigurdson, minister of agriculture and irrigation and Highwood MLA, released a statement commemorating the occasion.

"Every August, farms, ranches and ag-tourism operators across the province invite Albertans to experience Alberta Local Food Week and Open Farm Days," said Sigurdson.

Officially recognized during the third week of August since 2018, Alberta Local Food Week is an opportunity for the community to show support for products grown, made and harvested in the province.

Various events are held across Alberta for people to meet farmers, with the most prominent being Alberta Open Farm Days on Aug. 17 and 18.

"With about 170 host farms across the province opening their doors to offer open houses, great local food experiences, tours and an opportunity to buy Alberta-grown and produced products, visitors will see how their food is made and learn about the people who produce it," said Sigurdson.

Alberta Open Farm Days will be celebrated with special events at eight agri-tourism operations in the Foothills: Hartell Homestead, Tierra Flores Florals & Botanicals, OH Ranch Calgary Stampede, Bar U Ranch National Historic Site, Eau Claire Distillery, Spirit Hills Flower Winery, Priddis & Millarville Fair and Nanton Grain Elevators.

"Alberta is known around the world for producing premium-quality, great-tasting food with the highest standards of food safety, animal care, biosecurity and environmental stewardship," said Sigurdson.

"Whether it’s fresh produce, craft beer and cider or our world-renowned Alberta beef, Alberta’s agriculture producers provide our province, country and world with nutritious food every single day."

The statement follows an investment of nearly $1.9 million towards Alberta Beef Producers, announced on July 10 and jointly financed by the provincial and federal governments.

“I encourage you to visit a farmers’ market near you," continues Sigurdson's statement.

The Foothills hosts farmers' markets in Millarville, Okotoks, High River and Nanton — as Alberta Farmers' Market Association accredited markets, over 80 per cent of vendors are local.

“I encourage you to participate in some of the many activities happening this week and enjoy some delicious Alberta-made food and beverages. Have a great Local Food Week!”
