New ice resurfacing equipment is coming to two arenas in Okotoks, thanks to a government funding program.

The Town of Okotoks bought two ice resurfacers with the help of a $100,000 grant from the Electric Vehicles for Municipalities (EVM) program, the Town said in a press release on March 4.

The electric machines will be used at Centennial Arenas and Okotoks Recreation Centre, replacing older equipment and preventing indoor emissions and improving air quality inside the buildings, the Town said.

The new Olympia Millenium E Model resurfacers do not need oil changes and have longer-lasting brakes, reducing maintenance costs and downtime.

The purchase demonstrates the Town’s commitment to environmental and fiscal responsibility, said Daniel Robinson, recreation operations manager.

“We are proud to add two additional electric ice resurfacers to our electric fleet, which safeguards arena users from toxic air emissions, and supports a healthy recreation environment for our Town,” Robinson said.

Funding was provided by the Government of Alberta, through the Electric Vehicles for Municipalities (EVM), administered by the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC).

The MCCAC is a partnership of Alberta Municipalities, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta and the Government of Alberta.
