Okotoks home destroyed in overnight fire

All occupants made it out safely, but three pets remain unaccounted for following a house fire on Westridge Drive.

A fire destroyed a home in Okotoks' Westridge neighbourhood overnight.

Okotoks Fire Department Capt. Adam McInnis said firefighters were called to the fire on Westridge Road just before midnight on June 22.

"When the crew arrived, the fire was already in what we call a defensive situation," McInnis said.

The occupants made it out and were not injured. Two cats and one dog remain unaccounted for, he said.

Firefighters fought the blaze from outside and were able to keep it from spreading to neighbouring homes, although one other home has exterior damage and some water damage.

"The crews were still on scene this morning at 6:30 a.m. doing hot spots," he said. "And there's a couple of smouldering spots that we still have now."

As of 10:30 a.m., fire investigators remained on scene and said the cause of the fire has not been determined.

Additional information from the Town of Okotoks said one firefighter was treated in hospital for a dog bite.

An engine from Foothills County was dispatched to assist firefighting efforts at the scene.
