Civic politicians in Okotoks approved double-digit salary increases for themselves this week, their first raise in several years.

Mayor Tanya Thorn's salary increased by about 13 per cent, from $95,989 to $108,492.

Councillors’ annual pay jumped by almost $5,000 to $48,309, an increase of about 11 per cent.

A salary and benefits review was done earlier this year and the pay package was approved as part of the consent agenda during Okotoks council's Dec. 9 meeting.

The mayor’s last salary increase was in 2020 when it rose two per cent, following an 18 per cent increase in 2019, and councillors last saw an increase in 2019 with a raise of 13 per cent.

The Town’s compensation policies say salaries should be reviewed every council term, and the target for mayor and council salaries is the median of 11 comparable municipalities.

The review found salaries for elected officials were below the median.

The salary increase reflects mid-market rates as of July 22, the Town said.
