Okotoks' next recreation facility is one step closer to becoming a reality.
Construction is officially underway for the Okotoks Pickleball and Tennis Centre, with a groundbreaking ceremony on April 8 officially marking the start of the project.
The facility was made possible through a $1-million grant by the Government of Alberta’s Community Facility Enhancement Program, in addition to funding from the Town of Okotoks and donations from businesses and the public.
"It's really an example of what people can do when you put your mind to something," said Okotoks Pickleball and Tennis Centre Society president Ryan Sawatsky.
"It's really been such a positive experience for us, and a lot of hard work, but it's been a lot of fun, and we really do look forward to the next 12 months or so of putting this construction project together and opening this facility."
The facility, located at Chinook Arch Way in the northeast part of town, will offer 12 indoor pickleball courts and one indoor tennis court once phase one of the project is completed, with outdoor courts to come as part of the next phase.
"Once complete, the centre will provide year-round recreational opportunities for residents and visitors of all ages and skill levels," said Okotoks Mayor Tanya Thorn. "This centre will become a vibrant hub of year-round activity, welcoming athletes and recreation enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels."
