The Town of Okotoks has launched an online survey to gather feedback as it continues its efforts to enhance the social well-being of its residents.
The survey is part of a Social Needs Assessment that aims to evaluate the community’s strengths, assets and evolving social needs, and provide insights that will help shape Town policies and programs.
Participation from residents, businesses, social service organizations and other impacted groups will help the Town identify priorities and emerging social trends. The information collected will help in the development of social wellness strategies that are to be finalized in early 2025.
The survey can be found at shapeourtown.okotoks.ca/social-needs-assessment and is open until Dec. 15.
The survey has been designed to cover five key priorities based on what the Town has learned so far during community consultations. The five priorities that have been identified are as follows:
Community Affordability
Affordability is a key priority for Okotoks residents, as it directly affects their quality of life and sense of stability. With home prices on the rise and limited affordable rental options, many residents — especially young families, seniors and newcomers — are finding it increasingly challenging to secure affordable housing.
Accessibility and Inclusive Services
Access to essential services — like transportation, recreational programs and healthcare— is vital for the well-being of all Okotoks residents, particularly seniors, persons with disabilities and individuals without private vehicles. Many residents rely on public transit to maintain independence, yet current transit options can be unreliable.
Strengthening Community Connections
A strong sense of community is one of Okotoks’ most cherished qualities, with residents deeply valuing their sense of belonging and the opportunities to connect through shared spaces, events and friendly interactions. Community gatherings are vital for bringing people together.
How the Town Communicates
Clear and transparent communication from Town leadership is essential for residents who wish to stay informed and actively participate in decision-making processes. Many residents expressed frustration about feeling “out of the loop” when it comes to local initiatives or updates on services.
Growing in a way that Supports Everyone
As Okotoks grows, people want to make sure it stays a great place to live. There is a concern about maintaining Okotoks’ distinct identity as the town grows. Residents want to ensure that new developments preserve the charm and character that makes Okotoks special.
