Have you ever wondered how places like Mazeppa, Hartell, Tongue Creek, Longview, or Okotoks got their names? A new online database has the answers for thousands of locations across Alberta.
An interactive web tool that has information about nearly 9,000 place names was announced by the Province on Jan. 3 that can be searched by name, location or place type.
Called the Alberta Geographical Names Web Map, the tool offers easy access to learn about the cultures, people and history that have shaped the province, the Province said on Jan. 3.
The map can be used to find out how a town got its name, or if a particular historical figure has a place named after them and is a useful new resource for teachers and students to use when learning about notable places and people in Alberta’s history.
For history enthusiasts, it is a way to gather facts on a place name’s history, culture or language of origin, thematic association or the federal/provincial adoption dates.
