Thousands are expected to attend a Remembrance Day service in Okotoks.
The Town’s annual ceremony takes place at the Okotoks Centennial Arena on Saturday, Nov. 11. Doors open at 9 a.m. and the ceremony begins at 10:20 a.m.
The service is supported by the Royal Canadian Legion, in conjunction with the Town of Okotoks.
Okotoks Legion first vice president Rick Onescu said upwards of 3,000 people have attended past services.
A Remembrance Day service is also planned for the cenotaph in Okotoks. It will begin at 10:20 a.m. at the corner of Elma Street and Veterans Way, according to information on the Town’s website.
Road closures will be in effect along Veterans Way from Mountain Street to Elizabeth Street from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the service.
Attending Remembrance Day services is an important way to remember sacrifices made to protect Canadians and maintain freedom, Onescu said.
"Unfortunately, our Second World War veterans, their numbers are dwindling," he said, adding there are veterans from Afghanistan, the Balkans, Korea and peacekeepers. “Whether they endured injury or the ultimate sacrifice, we have to remember what they did."
In Diamond Valley, a Remembrance Day service will be held at Oilfields School, beginning at 10 a.m. Following the service, attendees are invited to the Turner Valley Legion Branch #78 between 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
