A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued Friday afternoon for Southern Alberta.
Environment Canada issued the watch at 1:45 p.m. on Friday. Aug. 23 including a host of communities in the region from Okotoks, High River, Foothills County to Strathmore, Claresholm, Vulcan and Lethbridge.
Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and large hail.
Thunderstorms have developed in Idaho and southern Montana. These thunderstorms are tracking very quickly to the north. When these thunderstorms cross the US border early this evening, some of them will likely be severe.
Watches will be expanded to the north as the situation develops. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.
Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
