Environment Canada updated its special weather statement for Okotoks and surrounding areas this morning.

It says the first accumulating snow of the season will fall today. Snow will start along the foothills this morning then push east across southern Alberta through the day.

Snow is expected to begin around noon in Okotoks and continue late in the evening.

Some areas may see total accumulations of 5 to 10 cm before the snow ends tonight.

Warm ground will initially cause some of the snow to melt. Snowfall accumulations will vary considerably.

Rain showers are expected in some areas before precipitation changes over to snow. This may result in slippery surfaces as temperatures fall below zero.

Environment Canada reminds people to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

The long-range forecast calls for sunny and cool for much of the week with single-digit highs before a warm front moves in on the weekend bringing high temperatures of 17C on Saturday and 13C on Sunday.
