The Turner Valley Legion will have a small outdoor ceremony at the cenotaph and a gathering for veterans Nov. 11, in addition to a ceremony that will be shared online.
After getting clarification on the Restrictions Exemption Program rules, the Legion has re-opened to full capacity for clients with two COVID vaccinations, allowing them to host a gathering for veterans on Remembrance Day.
Veterans will be getting together between 12 and 3 p.m. and are invited to a small ceremony at the cenotaph outside the Legion at 10:50.
“We will be lowering the flag and having the two minutes of silence,” said Legion member and 37-year veteran Paul Barton.
He said it would be great if everyone could gather as normal and said people can still visit the cenotaph throughout the day.
“The cenotaph is a permanent fixture,” he said. “If people wish to go there that same day and put their poppy down at the cenotaph like what happens when they bury veterans. There is no problem with that at all.”
A formal ceremony has been recorded and the link to the video will be posted to the Legion’s Facebook page from 10 to 11 a.m. on Remembrance Day.
The Legion will have its regular Thursday wings and pool night Nov. 11 and has darts on Wednesday night.
Barton said the dining room is open and is one of the few Legions that allows children in until 8 p.m.
“We invite the public out to support the Legion,” said Barton, adding they are like all other service clubs and restaurants that have been impacted by COVID shutdowns and restrictions.
