Workers install the new welcome sign at the northern limits of Okotoks on Dec. 2, 2021. The signs have not been lighting up at night but should be repaired soon, said the Town.

Solar-powered signs installed near highways on the outskirts of Okotoks have been dark recently, but the Town says a fix is on the way.

The three gateway signs are intended to light up at night, but they have not been working consistently since they were installed in 2021. One sign is on Highway 2A north of Okotoks, and the other two are on Highway 7, south of town.

Ben Morgan, with the Town of Okotoks, said some of the components have not been working as expected.

He said the company has found the problem and that the lights should be fully functional once parts are delivered, which should be within six to eight weeks.

“As I understand it right now, they have figured out the problem and the repairs are being done," he said.

Repairs are covered under warranty, at no cost to the Town, Morgan said.

The signs have had problems before and were often dark last winter. At that time, the problem was thought to be an under-powered electrical system that affected the system’s battery, and repairs were made in 2023.
