The defending regular season CPL champions have a new option in attack.

The Canadian Premier League’s Cavalry FC announced the signing of 26-year-old forward Nicolas Wähling to a guaranteed contract through the 2025 season.

“Nicolas is a very powerful and direct winger, who is strong at running with the ball and has a good history of scoring or creating goals,” said Cavalry FC head coach and GM Tommy Wheeldon Jr., in a team release. “He comes from a very good footballing background and brings us another attacking dimension.”

The 26-year-old played with 1899 Hoffenheim’s youth system, under the tutelage of current Germany National Team Manager Julian Nagelsmann, and was a teammate of a number of stars, including Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry and RB Leipzig’s Christoph Baumgartner.

Most recently, the attacker suited up for Germany’s TSV Steinbach Haiger.

Wähling adds to a revamped attack featuring fellow-German Tobias Warchewski, an offseason acquisition who leads the team with six goals, along with first-year members of the team Malcolm Shaw, Lleyton Brooks and recent signing Chanan Chanda.

“I’m very happy to be signing with Cavalry and can’t wait to play on ATCO Field,” said Wähling. “I want to help the team achieve our goals and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of this league and can’t wait to get started.”

The transaction comes on the heels of William Akio’s season-ending injury sustained last month and the departure of mercurial midfield talent Lucas Dias, who returned to Portugal’s Sporting CP following his loan spell with the CPL club.

The Cavalry, who saw their 10-game unbeaten run last week in Halifax, are back on the pitch on July 7 at Winnipeg’s Valour FC. Cavalry’s next home date is July 13 versus York United FC, a 2p.m. kick-off at ATCO Field.
