Sofia Pelkey, pictured at the IWWF World U17 Waterski Championships at Predator Bay in Foothills County in August, has been named to the Team Canada roster for the Pan American Water Ski Championships.

The best waterskiers in the Americas are set to assemble in Colombia.

And Sofia Pelkey, from the Bragg Creek area, is among the group after being named to Water Ski Canada’s 20-athlete contingent at the 2024 Pan American Water Ski Championships next week in Bogotá, Colombia.

“We are incredibly proud of the athletes selected to represent Canada on the international stage,” said Water Ski Canada in a release. “Their hard work, dedication, and passion for the sport make them outstanding ambassadors for our country.”

Pelkey, part of the U17 team, is one of five Albertans on the national squad. She’ll be competing in all three disciplines — slalom, trick, jump — in South America.

Pelkey recently starred at the IWWF World 17 Waterski Championships at Predator Bay in Foothills County. She finished 17th in the overall at the early-August event, second among all Canadian competitors.

In 2022, she won three medals in her debut on the Pan American stage in the U14 ranks.

The 2024 Pan American Water Ski Championships run Oct. 6-12.
