The Foothills Flyers pose with the Hockey Alberta U15 Tier 3 Provincial Championship after their 5-1 win over the Calgary Raiders in Athabasca on March 23.

A five-win weekend paved the way for an historic provincial title for Foothills.

The Foothills Flyers won five games to bring home the Hockey Alberta U15 Tier 3 Provincial Championship in Athabasca on March 23, becoming the first Foothills team at the bantam level to win a banner since 1963.

“This championship victory is not just about the wins, it’s about a team that came together, respected each other, and built a strong bond on and off the ice,” said team manager Brianne Fredell. “The 2024-25 season will be remembered as a hell of a season — one that brought home a provincial title and a lifetime of memories.”

In the final, the Flyers knocked off the Calgary Raiders by a 5-1 score, adding three unanswered goals in the third period to see out the result.

Fabian Tincher had two goals and two assists with Jett Fredell and Nolan Wilton adding a goal and two assists and Jaxon Fehr also lighting the lamp. Colton Dowie had 28 saves.

Fehr had two goals, Ryden Connor added the other in the 3-2 semifinal win over the East Smoky Rustlers.

In round robin, Foothills soared above the host Athabasca Hawks 6-4, doubled up the Raiders 4-2 and blanked the Wembley Wildcats 5-0 backstopped by Dowie’s 18-save shutout.

Fredell said the team wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering community support, from fans following from the stands in Athabasca to new supporters along the journey, adding that representing High River and the Foothills region on the ice was an honour.

The provincial banner will soon hang in both the High River and Blackie rinks.
