Foothills soccer league finals Thursday in Okotoks

Undefeated HTA Knights battle Canmore for gold, Comp plays STS for bronze

A rematch of the senior girls soccer league championship is on deck tomorrow in Okotoks.

The undefeated Holy Trinity Academy Knights will look to take back the Foothills Athletic Council senior girls soccer banner when they host the Canmore Wolverines on Thursday, Oct. 17 in the gold medal game at Bill Robertson Park.

“I think they’re just getting better game by game,” said HTA coach Brandon Heembrock. “They’re coming in having fun, they’re enjoying it, they all have smiles on their faces and that’s what we always say, when you come off the field make sure you’ve enjoyed your 90 minutes.”

HTA outlasted Canmore, the defending league champions, 1-0 on a late second half goal from midfielder Sarah Neuls in the regular season finale on Tuesday and earlier in the season played to a 1-1 draw.

“It’s two really good soccer teams that are playing,” Heembrock said. “The first time we played them they had a little more possession, it was about 60-40, this game was pretty even, and I’d say we had a little bit more of the ball.

“We talk about the ball doing the work and them doing the running and that paid off near the end of the game where they were a little bit more tired.”

In the bronze medal game, the Foothills Falcons and Strathcona-Tweedsmuir Spartans will do battle for that final spot on the league podium. Kick-off is also 4:30 p.m. at Falcons field on Thursday.

Later in the week, the Knights and Wolverines will both be travelling northwest to Springbank on Oct. 18-19 for the four-team South Central Zone championship against a pair of Rocky View teams.

The round-robin format sees each team play one another with the top-two advancing to the gold medal game and third and fourth seed battling for bronze.
