Foothills youth ride wave to national titles

Five southern Alberta competitors make podium at wakesurf nationals in B.C.

It might not be the first place you think of wakesurfing, but Okotoks and Foothills athletes are making waves in the sport.

The Wake Canada National Wakesurf Championships featured 60 athletes in 16 divisions Sept. 7 in picturesque Lake Koocanusa in B.C. with Okotoks and area athletes earning five podium finishes.

Casen Taylor, a 10-year-old from Foothills County and youngest athlete in the competition, took home the junior boys gold medal. Taylor surfs for the B.C. Wakesurf team.

Carly Reitenbach, a Foothills County youth and Strathcona-Tweedsmuir student, won the amateur female surf division and took silver in the amateur 2 skim competition.

Okotoks’ Makenna Thompson struck gold in the amateur 1 skim division while Payton Thompson claimed bronze in the junior girls event.
