Okotoks Female Hockey Classic a true showcase for sport

Raiders U18 AA team to feature for first time in annual Okotoks tournament this weekend

One of the marquee female hockey tournaments in Western Canada has hit a first.

The 17th annual Okotoks Female Hockey Classic will feature 48 teams in 11 divisions in five age groups taking to the ice at five Okotoks and area hockey rinks from Nov. 15-17.

“This year we have incorporated the U18 AA Rocky Mountain Raiders into the tournament,” said tournament organizer Jennifer Dustow. “So for the first time in 17 years, we will have a true showcase of what Okotoks has to offer for female hockey.”

Past tournaments have showcased the Raiders AA hockey program at the U13 and U15 levels, including last year where the U15 Raiders captured the championship. This will be the first time the U18 AA Raiders will be featured.

The U18 AA Raiders, provincial hosts last season, are off to a 4-4 start in the Alberta Female Hockey League.

The tournament will showcase teams in the U18, U15, U13, U11 and U9 divisions with representation from Alberta, B.C. and Saskatchewan on the ice.

Thirteen Okotoks teams will be part of the competition with at least one local team in each division.

Games will be played at both rinks in the Viking Rentals Centre, Okotoks Recreation Centre as well as a handful out of the Scott Seaman Sports Rink in Heritage Heights.
