Okotoks Oilers to play for provincial medal at home

Hockey Alberta U17 AAA championships conclude Sunday in Okotoks

A clutch victory has the Okotoks Oilers moving to the medal round at provincials.

Okotoks edged the Calgary Flames 2-1 on Saturday at the Viking Rentals Centre to improve to 2-2 in pool play as hosts of the Hockey Alberta U17 AAA Provincial Championships and advance to the bronze medal game Sunday morning.

MacLane Tetarenko and Seth Coderre scored third period goals with the Flames getting on the board in the late stages as Okotoks kept its medal hopes alive on Saturday.

Jaxon Hoye made 33 saves on 34 shots against a Flames team entering the weekend in first place in the tournament with an undefeated record through three games.

Okotoks will play the Red Deer Chiefs in the bronze medal game on Sunday, April 6 at 10 a.m. Calgary and the CAC Gregg Distributors will lock horns in the gold medal game at 2 p.m.

The Oilers opened the competition with a 5-2 win over the Chiefs on Thursday.

Gustav Rustebakke, Gavin Hurst, Gavin Wrathall, Koen Wainwright and Kesler Morrow scored in the win.

On day two of the competition, the St. Albert Flyers clipped the Oilers by a 3-2 score. Morrow, an alternate captain, had both goals in the loss.

The Oilers were then defeated 4-3 in the night game on Friday by CAC. Wrathall, the top scorer in the AEHL U17 AAA ranks, had two goals with Henry Evong adding the other tally.
