Okotoks schools find the zone to track provincials

Foothills, HTA, STS and Oilfields medal at South Central Zones in Calgary

Okotoks area schools had a field day at the South Central Zone championships.

The Foothills Falcons soared to 25 podium performances at the track and field zones on May 22 at Foothills Athletic Park in Calgary, 24 of the individual variety along with a gold medal in the 4x400m open relay event.

The long-distance running events were a huge source of medals for the Comp.

MacKendrick Weber won gold in both the 800m and 1,500m races, Noah Heuver cleaned up winning gold in the 300m hurdles, silver in 3,000m and 1,500m and bronze in the 800m.

Grade 12 Fraser Halbert earned gold in 1,500m, silver in the 3,000m and 800m with Grade 11 Nash Byam winning gold in the 3,000m and bronze in the 1,500m with Quincy Jenkins sprinting to silver in the 100m.

Sydney Neukom won a pair of silver in the senior girls 400m and 800m, Blake Robinson took bronze in the 200m, Ella Watkins claimed bronze in the 3,000m with Grade 11 Ella Kilshaw earning bronze in the 1,500m and 800m.

In the field events, Grade 12 Nate Selmser took gold in the high jump and bronze in triple jump, Grade 11 Owen Andrews took silver in the discus while juniors Declan Wurz and Amelia Lean took gold and silver in their respective high jump events and Bentley Olsen won bronze in the javelin.

The Holy Trinity Academy Knights took home 16 individual medals and made hay in the team events with five relay medals, including gold in the 4x100m junior boys and mixed 4x400m relay open.

Grade 12 Peter Wonderham earned doubled gold in the 400m and 800m with Grade 10 speedster Jadien Pellerin sprinting to gold in the 100m along with silver in the shotput.

Eva Gustafson took silver in the 200m and 400m, fellow Grade 11s Michael Makowsky took bronze in the 100m and Sydney David leapt to bronze in the high jump.

Among the Grade 12s, Jean Lim took silver in the 100m and Kaitlyn Brown the bronze in the 200m. The Grade 10 group saw Jaelyn Wood take two silvers in the 800m and 3,000m, Trinity Staudinger Kristy with silver in the 200m, Rachel Lavery bronze in the 400m, Ethan Boon bronze in the 200m and Kira Bartos bronze in the javelin.

The Strathcona-Tweedsmuir Spartans, a perennial power at the 2A level, won 10 individual medals and added another in intermediate girls 4x100m relay.

Grade 11 Abdur-Rhaman Anifowoshe paced the Spartans with three medals, gold in the triple jump along with bronze in the long jump and 200m sprint. Grade 10 Maximus Brauer added the other gold medal in the discus with fellow-juniors Lucy Govender claiming silver in the 1,500m and Krishmeet Singh in the 100m hurdles.

Maia McGillivray took silver in the intermediate girls 100m and 80m hurdles, Grade 12 Avinash Murthy won bronze in the 3,000m with Evie-Gale Smed leaping to bronze in the 300m hurdles.

The Oilfields Drillers earned a trio of medals in Calgary.

Grade 10 Carver Morris was responsible for two of them, winning gold in the junior boys 800m and 400m races while Micah Raugust claimed bronze in the senior boys high jump.

The Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association Track and Field Provincial Championships run June 7-8 in Edmonton.
