Sutherland off to strong start at Stampede

Chuckwagons: Foothills area drivers in top-12 at Rangeland Derby

Foothills favourites remain in striking distance in a milestone running of the Rangeland Derby.

Okotoks area driver Mark Sutherland is in seventh place through three days of competition at the Calgary Stampede Cowboys’s Rangeland Derby as the sport of chuckwagon racing celebrating its 100th anniversary since it debuted at the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.

High River’s Jason Glass is in a strong position as well in 12th place through three races, highlighted by a nine-place showing on day two. Blackie’s Jordie Fike is in 24th place.

Chanse Vigen leads the standings through three days, four-time Rangeland Derby champion Kurt Bensmiller is second and Obrey Motowylo sits third.

The races continue daily at 7:45 p.m. The top-three in the aggregate following the July 15 performances advance to the championship final heat with a shot at the 2023 Rangeland Derby title on July 16.

In the rodeo, the first of three pools came to a close on Sunday.

Longview barrel racer Bradi Whiteside was fifth on July 9, her best of three finishes, and ended up in eighth place in Pool A in her Stampede debut.

Bradi’s sister Kylie Whiteside is up next in barrel racing in Pool B of the rodeo, running July 10-12, a grouping that also features Okotoks steer wrestler Jonny Webb and former Okotokian Jordan Hansen in the bull riding. The rodeo wraps up on championship Sunday featuring the top-four finishers in each of the three pools.
