S&P/TSX composite down in late-morning trading, U.S. stock markets mixed

TORONTO — Canada's main stock index edged lower in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the energy and base metal sectors, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 15.47 points at 23,936.75.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 183.36 points at 42,024.86. The S&P 500 index was up 0.36 points at 5,733.29, while the Nasdaq composite was up 44.17 points at 18,118.69.

The Canadian dollar traded for 74.29 cents US compared with 74.25 cents US on Tuesday.

The November crude oil contract was down 65 cents at US$70.91 per barrel and the November natural gas contract was up four cents at US$2.83 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was up US$4.80 at US$2,681.80 an ounce and the December copper contract was up less than a penny at $4.50 a pound.
