COLUMN: Liberal government’s transparency has long since vanished

Foothills MP says the hypocrisy is galling as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau talked about “transparency” more than 400 times in Parliament.

Governments are judged not just by what they do, but how they do it. They should be judged on integrity, character and trust.

The current Liberal-NDP government is failing Canadians not only because of a cost-of-living crisis caused by their own catastrophic policies, but also through scandal, corruption and abuse of taxpayers’ dollars.

The Canadian people have a right to know how their tax dollars are being spent, and yet the Liberal government is trying to evade accountability, something Canadians very much deserve.

The RCMP commissioner confirmed the prime minister's hand-picked directors of the Green Slush Fund are under criminal investigation. Nine appointees have been implicated in funneling $400 million of taxpayer dollars to their own companies. Let this sink in. Nearly $400 million of your money funneled to Liberal insiders and appointees.

Meanwhile, Liberals are complicit in wanting to hide the facts by refusing to produce the documents to the House and obstructing justice by snubbing cooperation with the RCMP investigation.

Corruption has been a habit of Justin Trudeau’s government. SNC Lavalin, the WE scandal, ArriveScam App, the vacation at Aga Khan Island, the scandals have become almost too numerous to count for a prime minister who has twice been found in contempt of the conflict of interest rules.

The scale of this latest corruption is disgusting, and Canadians are outraged with how Liberals took advantage of their position of power to enrich their friends.

The hypocrisy is galling as Trudeau talked about “transparency” more than 400 times in Parliament. His first private member’s bill in 2013 was the Transparency Act. Where is that commitment to be the most open and transparent government in Canadian history now?

It is long gone, another Liberal promise broken. Now, secrecy has become a key hallmark of a government that froze the bank accounts of Canadians through the draconian Emergencies Act.

It goes on and on as the Trudeau Liberals refuse to disclose the legal advice relied upon, to orders in council, to declining to reveal even the existence of colossal contracts - the early promises about a government that would be “open by default” have long since vanished.

After nine years of this prime minister, the promise of Canada has been broken. Trudeau promised to balance the budget, to reduce taxes on the middle class and to build more affordable housing, but all those promises were broken. Perhaps most importantly, he has broken Canadians’ trust.

Canadians deserve better. They deserve an honest, accountable government that doesn’t abuse their hard-earned dollars.

While the prime minister vandalizes Parliament, shuns the House of Commons and continues down his path of scandal and corruption, Conservatives will hold the Liberals' feet to the fire and hold those who abused Canadians’ tax dollars to account.
