Dear Editor,
As a resident of Diamond Valley for many years, I have seen a shift in the attitude towards mayor and council. The amalgamation seems to have set it off.
Mayor and council are still on that learning curve of not only trying to keep taxes low, but still trying to generate a more sound tax base. Development in the area always comes to the forefront.
People have the idea that the green space that may surround them is theirs. Unfortunately, it is not. With the high demand for affordable housing along with affordable senior housing, these green spaces become a premium development location.
Mayor and council are not the enemy. Unfortunately, the demands by society and social media are. People who have parents or relatives want cheap accommodation for their loved ones no matter what has to be done to achieve that goal.
With the price of land and lumber, I cannot see the problem going away soon. Subsidized housing also has been talked about and that comes from taxpayer pockets. Not sure if there is an appetite for that.
When buying property, I suggest going to the Town Office and asking what is planned for development around the property you plan to purchase. Then you will know for sure.
Mayor and council are in a spot; they are trying to please the few but must take into consideration the 5,000-plus residents who may be impacted.
In closing, I would say we all are very fortunate to live in Diamond Valley. Our Town staff, firefighters, peace officers, community volunteers and the RCMP make this a great community. Get out and volunteer, make it better.
