LETTER: Enforcement needed to change driver behaviour

Drivers on Highway 2 or anywhere else will continue to ignore the rules of the road without adequate enforcement.

Dear Editor,

Re: Lower speed limit on dangerous stretch of Hwy. 2, Nov. 13

I certainly agree that something has to be done about the excessive speed on Highway 2. However, the replacement of signs lowering the speed limit will do nothing to improve things.

Why would drivers take notice of the new signs when they are ignoring the present ones? New signs will not change their attitude. That is the problem.

Human nature is such that people will bend the rules to their advantage if there is little chance of them being reprimanded. I think we all learned that in childhood! What we need is more enforcement of the rules of the road.

This problem is not confined to Highway 2, it is a problem everywhere I drive. Drivers are completely ignoring the rules of the road and are not slowing down to posted speed limits.   I have seen vehicles not stopping at a red light when turning right, speeding through construction zones with workers present, speeding through school zones and passing me, even a town truck!

There isn’t enough room here to list them all. Where is the enforcement?

I guess we have to wait until there is a tragedy where numerous lives are lost before the present situation is considered a problem.  What is wrong with prevention?
