LETTER: Keep Okotoks garbage collection on a weekly schedule

Garbage left rotting in bins for two weeks will attract wildlife and create odours.

Garbage collection in Okotoks will transition to biweekly pickup next spring.

Dear Editor,

Re: Okotoks switching to biweekly garbage pickup next year, Nov. 27

The issues haven't changed since the last discussion a few years ago. Garbage is starting to rot within a week and should be picked up then, not waiting for two weeks for convenience or cost cutting.

If biweekly happens, I will be leaving my garbage can outside, which is unsightly, so I will leave it around the back where I can't see if the wind has blown it over or critters have gotten into it. The attraction of wildlife will abound with this new "food source."

Even though we do organic separation, that does not help with odours such as packaging. Roast chicken, for one, has an absorbent material under it that one can rinse but it still stinks after a while and that is only one example.

Previously one neighbour mentioned having two kids in diapers. What happens with that? Not everyone has extra fridges to put their garbage into for pickup in another week.

This decision needs to be rethought and kept the way it is.
