Black Diamond Gallery showcases and sells a wide variety of Teak and Suar woods artistically hand crafted along with Petrified woods with the creations starting their journey in Sumatra and Bali, Indonesia.
“Reclaimed teak roots are hand extracted to allow for an eco-friendly, low impact, soft footprint so reforestation can replenish this renewable resource,” explains Bernie Davidson, the gallery manager. “As part of the reforestation efforts in the region, the older teak roots are hand removed from the ground. By repurposing these roots into artwork, you can have an item where the wood itself is 200-400 years old.”
The gallery tells a tale as old as time. Some items in the gallery are made from petrified wood from the island of Sumatra. The petrified wood is between 10 & 20 million years old.
When you enjoy an item from Black Diamond Gallery, you are enjoying a piece of natural history from the earth.
“Some visitors refer to the gallery as a sanctuary,” smiles Davidson, “As each piece has their own Unique identification and artistic flair. There is a peaceful, gentleness felt here with all these unique and natural pieces. Whether a purchase is made or not, we encourage people to come in and enjoy the soothing atmosphere of the gallery and spend some quiet time experiencing the art.”
The Black Diamond Gallery was founded by Rusty Davidson. His journey began in 1970 with his brothers having a retail concept in downtown Calgary. Rusty has traveled extensively to many countries and was inspired by the Indigenous art styles of the Middle East, Asia, and South America.
In the subsequent years, Rusty began importing teak root furniture from Java and Indonesia. The Indonesian government certifies the age of the teak roots and ensures that they were crafted into art pieces and furniture by local artisans before they can be exported.
In 2004, Rusty opened The Black Diamond Gallery in Black Diamond, Alberta. The gallery offers a wide variety of items including benches, chairs, tables desks, carvings, sculptures, carpets, hangings, garden accents, and interior décor.
Black Diamond Gallery is unique in every sense of the word, from the family that travelled worldwide searching for natural materials ethically sourced to create amazing artworks - freezing history in time.
