Big-box stores and online shopping sites have received attention for running reputable toy stores out of business, but Monkey Mountain Toys and Games has a lot of life left in it. The business was voted best toy store during Best of the Foothills 2018. Manager Krista Hunt said its win is owed to the help and kindness of the community. She thinks their business stands out from others due to its attention to customer service, unique inventory, and the shopping experience they offer. “I really believe that you can’t beat an in-person experience - you can shop online all you want, but you can never get the same kind of care and attention from a computer as you can get in person,” said Hunt. She said its experience invites rave reviews. The store attracts customers from Calgary and even across Canada. “I think the first reaction a lot of people have is, ‘wow, you have a lot of stuff in here.’ They come in and there’s a lot to see, people are usually very impressed with our selection,” she said. “We carry brands that are usually exclusive to specialty stores and are not found in big-box stores.” Hunt said when Monkey Mountain doesn’t have something, it goes the extra mile to get it. “We had a customer that was looking for something, and it actually had been discontinued, but we were able to hunt one down,” Hunt said. “It took a couple of months, but we were able to get it in time for Christmas which was what she ultimately wanted.” Tasks like these help make Hunt’s job truly fulfilling. “This is the most fun and pleasant job I’ve ever had. The children sometimes cry on the way out, but they’re usually in pretty good spirits while they’re in here,” she said. “It’s so lighthearted and fun all the time.”
