The Foothills Energy Co-op Solar Program is designed to empower homeowners to produce their own electricity using solar panels installed on their property. The program offers a unique Solar Rate, which allows members to receive credits for the excess power they contribute back to the grid. This means the more energy your solar panels produce, the lower your energy bill will be. Switching to solar energy can result in significant cost savings over time; the long-term benefits far outweigh the initial investment.
Included in the Solar Club are special rates, flexible plans, and 2% cash back annually on energy imported from the grid. Members of the Club can switch for free (with 10 day’s notice) between the high export rate (30 cents/kWh) for solar micro-generators exporting more electricity to the grid than they are importing, or the low export rate (11.75 cents/kWh) for solar micro-generators importing more electricity from the grid than they are exporting.
What exactly is micro-generation?
Micro-generation involves the small-scale production of electricity utilizing renewable and alternative energy resources. Common sources include solar and wind power, used by individual homeowners, small businesses, and community or municipal buildings to fulfill their electricity requirements.
In 2016, Alberta's Micro-generation Regulation underwent amendments to provide Albertans with more flexibility in their electricity generation. These changes encompassed an increase in the size limit of a micro-generation system from 1 megawatt to 5 megawatts and the allowance for a micro-generating system to service nearby sites.
