It was an idea – and a very good one – that took off in a very positive direction. That idea was the Diamond Valley Youth Foundation (DVYF), a dynamic, agile, new organization that has made an incredible impact in a short period of time.
DVYF President Tania Ryckman discusses how this initiative went from a concept to a one-time fundraiser, to a full-fledged non-profit organization.
“We are a group of passionate, dedicated individuals who came together to form DVYF,” says Ryckman. “Our mission is to raise funds and provide extra resources for the youth of our community, therefore empowering youth of all ages and from all walks of life to thrive.”
She goes on to note, “With Alberta’s current economic situation, plus the long reach of cancelled programs and mental health outcomes driven in part by COVID, we recognize the challenges faced by schools and parents in providing the best experiences for their children. Field trips, sporting activities, arts, music, science, technology, and even playground maintenance all require additional funding. DVYF aims to bridge the gap and ensure that all children have equal access to these enriching opportunities.”
Ryckman and the DVYF team are “floored” by the response of the community to date. Many individuals and organizations have endorsed and joined forces with DVYF in this effort, highlighting a shared commitment to empowering youth and building stronger community connections.
“Everyone wants to get involved!” she smiles.
Mark your calendar for this year’s inaugural fundraiser! The Fall Fling is taking place on November 4, with a goal to raise $20,000 in funds for the community’s two local public elementary schools. Held at the local FLARE N’ DERRICK, and featuring the pubadelic band Haggis for entertainment, silent auction, food and drinks, the funds will enable the schools to invite resident artists, arrange theatre productions, introducing STEM focused programs and other experts to enrich the curriculum; as well as funding field trips, transportation, and updating technology for the classes.

Ryckman concludes, “Larger charities and organizations are often slowed down by bureaucracy, but we are just five members and are brand new. This makes us incredibly agile and gives the DVYF the ability to make an impact without the red tape. We are a bit challenged time-wise right now. All of us are working full-time outside of DVYF, but with the support and engagement of the community, we are thrilled about the powerful position we are in to move forward and make a difference now, and for many years to come.”
