GALLERY: Okotoks students celebrate French culture

École Okotoks Junior High School students took part in a Carnaval-style celebration on March 12 for Month of La Francophonie.

Okotoks students got to celebrate French culture with outdoor activities, maple taffy and more.

On March 12, École Okotoks Junior High School students took part in activities such as tug of war, can toss, log race and playing spoons, while la tire, the French name for traditional French-Canadian maple taffy, was on the menu.

The event, a smaller-scale Franco-Albertan version of the Carnaval de Québec, was a celebration of Month of La Francophonie, commemorated in Canada and across the world every March. International Day of La Francophonie is celebrated on March 20.

With over 260,000 speakers in the province, French is the second-most spoken language in Alberta.

École Okotoks Junior High School students will soon be performing their production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast, with three performances open to the public on March 28 and 29. Tickets are available here.
