Kids are sure to have a wild time with an animal-themed debut book from an Okotoks author.

The Zoo Inside Me is a collaboration of author Kelly Miller with prolific local artist Jenny Dale Stables, who drew illustrations for the children’s book.

The Zoo Inside Me is actually my 20th publication that I’ve done,” said Stables, who has additionally run an art business for 11 years. ”I’ve done picture books, a series of educational resources, poetry books and early chapter books, as well as academic publications.”

Miller was inspired to write the book by her family and by Stables, who has written 13 books.

“It’s a local book,” said Miller. “My inspiration comes from my kids and all kids, and I’m so proud of this book.”

Stables offered to illustrate the book after their meeting, saying the book’s concept “was just the most delightful idea.”

The two local artists feel that Miller’s storytelling combined with Stables’ artwork and experience make for something special in The Zoo Inside Me.

“The energy I felt that Kelly was bringing, it was this really joyful energy that’s really child-centred,” said Stables.

“But at the same time, it has this little nugget, which I won’t spoil, that will just make the parents fall in love with this book as much as the kids.”

A book launch was held last Saturday, with Miller reading the book to an audience and Stables hosting a crafts activity for kids in attendance.

Miller and Stables will be hosting a workshop in March centred around The Zoo Inside Me in which participants will get to make their own animal puppet and take home a copy of the book.
